• Berry Picking

I grew up in the city and berry picking was not something I was able to do very often.  Of my childhood memories, one that stands out is berry picking for my grandma out in her small rural community.  All the sights and sounds of that day are entrenched in my brain – tall raspberry canes with all their luscious fruit, flies buzzing around us, sunshine warming our faces. Later I was fascinated with the process as my mother helped my grandmother preserve those berries.  I had always enjoyed the delicious canned fruit when I came to visit grandma; now I saw how it was made. To this day, when…

  • A Trip to Bountiful

Recently I watched the 1985 movie “A Trip to Bountiful”.  The movie, set in the 1960s, focused on an elderly woman who wanted to return to her childhood home in rural Bountiful. She had been living with her son and daughter-in-law in the city and circumstances were not the greatest, both in relationships and in setting. The…

Someone posted a picture on Facebook today that if you are sick of the hot weather, just wait 16 weeks and we will have this – then showing a picture of a blizzard.  That posting got me thinking – we complain…

  • Stinging Nettle

At present our acreage has our mobile home sitting on it in the middle of a huge dirt area.  One dirt expanse is designated for garden, another for the placement of some storage sheds.  A third dirt covered area is where we shall build our house someday. While having open areas are great, it is a haven for weeds.  All around our house location are stinging nettles.  Weeds of any sort are annoying, but nettles have the added issue of causing skin reactions if they are touched by bare skin.  It is not a patch that I would want to walk through with sandals. Nettles are difficult to kill.  If…
