    I was recently reading a comparison between a 1970s Christmas and today’s.  One fact that struck me from the list is that in the 1970s all the Christmas “hype” didn’t start until 2 weeks before. As a child I remember practicing for Christmas programs but that didn’t begin until late November.  Now it is common for Christmas practices to begin early in November.  Christmas school concerts are huge productions that tend to wear out all involved.   • The Benefits of Hoarseness

    This week is my week of choir concerts.  My sacred choir performs in a number of churches over an eight day period.  It is a time of flurried activity and joyous interchanges.  I greatly enjoy the fellowship of my choir members and I love to sing. Much to my chagrin, I awoke this morning with very little voice.  Perhaps I pushed myself too hard in the last concert and/or it was doing lots of talking at a Christmas party last night.  It means I will not be singing today and that makes me sad.  I practice lots and enjoy doing the concerts – I don’t want to miss out on…

  • With Sadness

    Yesterday I learned that a former student of mine and a child of friends, now 17 years old, was found dead.  His family had been searching for him for 3 days before the body was found in a local river. I can’t even imagine what it must feel like to lose a child.  I have walked beside family and friends who have had that sad experience, but I can only touch the very tip of the iceberg as to how that feels.  I wonder at times what words would be most helpful at this time.
