How the Past Can Help Shape Our Future
Have you ever had a memory haunt you? Some days it seems that out of the blue, something from my past comes back to intrude on my present. Unfortunately, it’s not usually the happy memories that intercede in my day. It’s those past moments, when life was troubled in some way, that come back to interfere with my thought processes for the day. Those memories often can deflate my day and get me dwelling on that which is not helpful for my well-being.
Something that encourages me in times like these is a quote from Corrie ten Boom, someone who endured incredible atrocities in her life experiences:
“This is what the past is for. Every experience God gives us, every person He puts into our lives, is the perfect preparation for the future that only He can see.”
I wonder at times why certain things have happened in my life. Why does God allow times of severe trials and not find a way for me to avoid them? I’m sure you have wondered the same. Yet, when I look back to some of those struggling times I see God’s might hand at work, both in my life and in the lives of those around me.
My past has shaped my today. My life experiences, both positive and negative, help me to minister to others walking a similar road. I have been better prepared to face current situations because of what I have dealt with in the past.
That doesn’t make today’s struggles any easier though, does it? Thinking of future good out of today’s pain is not high on our list of ways to cope with the troubles we face.
God’s Old Testament people had similar feelings. Grumblings and questions about why they are suffering are in evidence throughout Israel’s history. King David himself, had many ups and downs in his life both before and after becoming ruler of Israel. He hurt himself and others, made poor decisions, and endured persecution.
Yet David knew where his source of strength lies. He writes:
“I remember the days of old; I meditate on all that you have done; I ponder the work of your hands.” (Psalm 143:5 ESV)
If we, like David, look back through Scripture we are presented with numerous instances of God’s might hand working in the lives of His people. God is faithful. He is truthful. He keeps His promises.

Perhaps you are at a point today when you wonder if God will sustain you. Things seem hopeless and the path ahead looks covered in obstacles. At times like these it is helpful to remember how God has cared for His people throughout history. It is also useful to look back on your life and remember the times when you knew that God was truly working in your life
and helping you through challenging situations or using those difficult circumstances to help you help others.
God will not just put us on a raft and send us adrift in the sea. Instead, He puts us in a boat that He gently guides – through wide easy passages and difficult narrow ways. Think back and remember what He has done for you and for others. It will help.
