When Life Goes on Auto Pilot

While living out in the country has many advantages, one downfall is the extra time spent driving to get anywhere. It’s a 45 minute drive to work. I have a 25 minute drive to church, to medical facilities, and to do major shopping. As I drive my winding country road to get to the main highway, I often find myself going for miles without really thinking about it.

It is truly amazing how the brain operates. What an intricate design God made that allows me to drive my vehicle on a familiar road without consciously doing it. Yet it scares me at times to think about how far I drive without really thinking about it sometimes.

My life in general can be like that – on auto pilot. I go through the motions of my days without much thought. I make meals, tend to my home, do projects, etc. without really giving much consideration as to how to go about them. Sadly, sometimes my faith life falls into the same trap. I know that I am a forgiven child of God and that He guides my life, but at time I don’t really give Him much consideration in my day.

Thankfully, God tells us in 2 Corinthians:

God’s power shows up more predominantly when we are at our most fragile moments. How thankful I am for God’s grace that gives me the strength to face my days, no matter what the circumstances. Even when I am not actively conscious of all He is doing, He is there – guiding, forgiving, encouraging, loving.

I get annoyed with myself when my life seems to get on auto pilot. I want very much to actively serve my Lord. It is frustrating when I fall down in the task. Thankfully, God picks me up, dusts me off, and sets me back on the correct path. He gives me gentle reminders when I am tempted to let my mind stay in neutral. He gives me opportunities to share His Word and proclaim the Gospel. He even gives me tasks to do in His kingdom for which I feel inadequate – yet He provides the means to do them.

It is so very important to remember that God’s grace is there for us all the time and as this Scripture verse promises, God’s grace is enough for us to get through whatever happens. When we are tempted to look for other sources of assurance we need to stop and take note that God promises to provide all we need. Yes, there are earthly supports, but ultimately it is God who sustains us and carries us through both good times and bad.

On days when we feel on the weak side and things just aren’t going well, we can hold onto God’s Word and let that stabilize us. May you draw from the eternal well of God’s comfort and support, now and always.
